Phone not recognized by pc or ITunes when using USB cable

Neither my pc nor my Itunes are recognizing my phone when I plug it in using the usb cable. There seems to be a problem with the Apple Mobile Device USB Composite Device. I have followed all of the directions but no matter what I try it remains disabled. The Windows updates, IPhone updates and ITune updates are all current. I have powered the pc and the phone off. I asked a coworker to try it on his pc and the same thing happens with his phone on his pc. I'm stuck!

If you connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, get help.


When iTunes on your computer doesn't recognize your connected device, you might see an unknown error or a "0xE" error. If you do, follow these steps and try to connect your device again after each step:

  1. Make sure that your iOS device is unlocked and on the Home screen.
  2. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes that works with your computer.
  3. Check that you have the latest software on your Mac or Windows PC.
  4. Make sure that your device is turned on.
  5. If you see a Trust this Computer alert, unlock your device and tap Trust.
  6. Unplug all USB accessories from your computer except for your device. Try each USB port to see if one works. Then try a different Apple USB cable.*
  7. Restart your computer and iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
  8. Try connecting your device to another computer. If you have the same issue on another computer, contact Apple Support.

Another co worker tried to connect his phone to his pc and had the same problem. The common problem seems to be the Apple Mobile Device USB Composite Device. Both of us had recently connected our phones to our pc's using the USB cable. Something seems to be causing the composite device to disable itself but I can't find out what that is. I deleted the device, updated the device, nothing seems to work. The wizard says that the device has been enabled, but immediately goes right back to disabled.
