Hi
I'm working on numbers latest version (5.3) on MacPro and trying to edit a cell I discovered that this function is not working.
I've tried closing application, restarting mac etc but problem persists. It does work with "Currency" but not automatic nor number.
All info I have found on community is of years and no post lately.
Can you help me please? There is no update for Numbers right now.

What are the settings in System Preferences > Language & Region?

Following up on Yellowbox's suggestion, click on the advanced tab of Language & Region to see the characters to be used as the thousands separator ("grouping") for numbers and for currency. Numbers and currency have separate settings.
So this did it Ian! You solved it. I was on Argentina Region and I couldn't see any thousands separator on footer example. Then I switched it to Spain and got it back to Argentina and it solved it out!

Have you tried starting a new document and seeing if you have the problem there as well?

You can also (in Numbers 5.3) change the Language & Region for a single document.

I am unable to select an "automatic with thousands separator" format. As soon as I select the thousands separator, the format changes to Number, as in the screenshot above.

Yes, quite that. Specifically thousands separator is not activating. I can select between automatic or number but neither will work. Simple but maddening. Any ideas? Preferences menu?
