how do I disconnect external drive from my mac?

Drag the drive's icon to the Trash or you can go to Disk Utility and click on the arrow next to the drive. Or, shutdown and unplug the drive from the computer.

You can also right click the external drive's icon on your Desktop (if it's there) and select Eject. After the drive has ejected you can unplug it from your Mac.
