Need Help - Lost Photos

Hi,
I recently did a format of my pc, aswell as a firmware update on my iphone 3g.

Once the install was done, I noticed that I had lost all my photo's and contacts, and that itunes didnt have any back-up's to restore from, although itunes said it backed up my iphone before installing.
I need help to get these photo's back as there were quite a few and I can't get them again. Please help
