A grid of adverts covering screen!

I keep getting an entire grid of different ads across my screen. There is an x on the left to close it.

Ive tried clearing data, restarting, downloading an ad blocker and checked my ad settings are blocking pop ups. Nothing has worked.

is my only option to back up and reset to factory settings?

See if this helps-->Dealing with Safari popups that won't go … - Apple Community

You might also have been tricked into installing a profile that gives an app extra privileges. See this Apple tip to deal with it-->How to delete an app that has a configuration profile on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

AdGuard is by far the best I have found, however, you need to install it and you need to change its default options.

To install, after running it for the first time go to Settings/Safari - Content Blockers and turn on AdGuard.

Then launch the AdGuard app, tap Filters, and turn on these if they are not already checked:

  • Base filter
  • Mobile Ads filter
  • Spyware filter
  • Social Media Filter
  • Annoyances Filter (this is probably the most important for your issue)
  • Safari filter

Thanks- helpful. I’ve been doing that but without putting into airplane mode. Will have to try.

I just went into data and found an adkeeper.uk site came up. On a search I found malwaretips.com which says this legitimate site is often bundled with malicious adware on a software download I probably did. They recommend downloading their malware bytes anti adware three step tools. Fourth optional step if I’m still experiencing problems is to reset to default settings.

Anyone know these guys?

Hello FrancineH,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you're seeing a pop-up ad on your screen.

To clarify, is this coming up in Safari, or a different app?

Are you able to tap the button in the lower right corner of Safari to open a new tab, and then close out of the tab that seems to have the pop-up ad?

You might also find the "Pop-ups and ads in Safari" section of this link helpful: How to block pop-ups in Safari. I recommend trying any steps in this resource that you've not yet tried to see if they clear things up.

I hope this helps get you started.

Cheers.

Hi there FrancineH,

We appreciate the follow-up information. To clarify, is this only happening with links that you open from Pinterest?

Are you running iOS 12.1.4 under Settings > General > About? How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Do you have any updates available for Pinterest? You can check by opening the App Store and then tapping Updates in the lower right.

Kind regards.

It’s definitely not just their site. That was only yesterday and I’m back to it popping up all over. Probably it takes the malware a bit of time to ‘break in’ to the higher security sites after I clear the cache/restart etc. So Avira anti virus, vpn Luna and Safari AdGuard have all failed.

The ads are a mixture but there’s always one included for penis enlargement or some such. Could be embarrassing LOL!

My husband suggested I switch search engine from google to duck duck go. Again so far so good. Let’s see if this holds out.

Thanks Becky

i did not want to close with their cross, however can only work out to close that way. Because the adds cover the entire screen, no bars come up top or bottom to open another page.

I get this in Safari and on Pinterest, when clicking to visit a site from Pinterest. Not sure if that really means also Safari, as it opens to the site within a Pinterest overarching domain- not sure of the right word.

I do have the settings you mention for blocking pop ups. Most people seem to talk about pop ups within/on a page, but this covers everything.

Was wondering when the next software update comes out, as hopefully that might block it?

Thanks

Francine

Sorry for the late reply. I am on 12.1.4 iOS. I see there is a further update just out and wondering if I should do it while I have what appears to be adware in my phone. It’s definitely a problem in Safari. I only commented that it has also happened from Pinterest but I think it may be the Safari link from a Pinterest page. So not sure if Pinterest is also affected- possibly. I removed the vpn based Luna plus extension to block ads In apps and Safari, as that was ineffective. However I haven’t tried a traditional ad blocker yet, so maybe I should try that.

i tried getting help from our one local apple store yesterday but the service queue was so long I had to give up.

Today while trying to open a legitimate site from google, I couldn’t open it on a few tries because every time I open a new window the gridlock of ads hijacks the entire page except page name at the top. So I would close that page and open another one, go to the link and same thing happens. I use google search engine to find everything so it could be embedded in that.
