Can you connect two pairs of airpods to one computer at once

My wife and I would like to watch movies together without waking the children using two pair of the 2019 AirPods. I previously was able to do this with Sony Bluetooth headphones using Audio MIDI Setup to create a Multi Output Device. Has anyone had any luck doing this?

iMac 27", macOS 10.14

Yes. You can. At least I have done it with AirPods Gen2.

Using Audio MIDI Setup.

  1. Sync both pair of AirPods to your Mac.
  2. In Bluetooth Preferences for both pair of AirPods under Options uncheck "Automatic Ear Detection"
  3. Open Audio MIDI Setup app, and create a new Multi-Output Device (MOD)
  4. Rename it to something you will recognize, like "AirPods"
  5. Both pairs of AirPods should be listed under "Audio Device". Select them.
  6. With the new MOD you created selected in the left column, Click on the Gear icon and choose "Use this Device for Sound Output"
  7. In the system Audio Menu Select your MOD as the output device. ( it should already be, but just check)
  8. In iTunes select Computer for output. Don't select AirPods for output.

Caveats:

  • This works but they are both united into one device now. If one person leaves Range (or puts them in their case) the other person will also lose connectivity.
  • It seems rather difficult for iTunes or the system to change back to it's original settings. My AirPods were showing as still connected but there was no audio playing through them I had to restart the computer for things to straighten out.
  • You can use the Shift+Option key combo while selecting the Bluetooth Finder Menu to reset the Bluetooth Module if things get really sketchy.
