Free upgrade to 4k movies

Hi,

I am trying to find out if apple still upgrade purchased films to 4k (if eligible) if you buy the apple 4k TV. Have seen all sorts of replies and articles that say both yes and no (rumours about a new streaming service and so less emphasis on the apple TV device). I would like to know as I am thinking of upgrading from my third gen apple TV to 4k. Thanks.

Well maybe I am really thick today as I could not link this properly either. This reply (below) is useful and I rang apple UK who said that my films would stream as 4k on an appropraite device, otherwise e.g. offline it would be HD. Best thing is to try it I suppose but I am going to wait until after next week's conference. Thanks everyone for contributions.

Just had an interesting conversation with an apple chat advisor who informed me that not all previous HD movie purchases will automatically be available to you for free when its made available in 4K.

I have previously purchased Labyrinth in HD.

The movie is now on the 4K store.

I am asked to purchase this move instead of being able to stream it in 4K.

Apparently this is because the content provider has modified (whatever that means) the film so I have to purchase it in 4k as well if I want to watch it.

Its worth stating; I do have a number of previous HD purchases that are all working free of charge in 4K without issue. Man of Steel, Prometheus, Batman vs Superman and Despicable Me are all streaming in 4K and not additional payment has been made.

I have added some of the transcript for info.... Very frustrating!

I have just noticed that the movie Labyrinth is now available in 4k ... i have this movie in HD but when i attempt to watch it in 4k i have to purchase it???

Sharan

Yes, currently as of now, you will not be able to switch the movie, you will need to pay for it.

Sharan

I have carefully reviewed UK iTunes Store and found that those movies have been modified on UK iTunes Store that is the reason you are unable to watch them in 4K.

Sharan

I see that you have purchased the movie “labyrinth” in 7.99 GBP and now the price of the movie is changed to 6.99 GBP.

Sharan

Since the content is modified by the content provider that’s the reason you are unable to play in 4K.

For the rented/purchased movies, the HD movies are the same item as the 4K movies. In contrast, the SD movie versions are different items.

If Apple has a 4K version available, then you can view that version, also if you purchased the HD version long ago when 4K wasn’t available. You don’t have to re-purchase 4K if you got the HD version before.

Not all movie titles are available in 4K in the iTunes Store. Notably Disney distributed titles are available in 4K from a different content provider than the iTunes Store.

If you got the HD version of a movie through an affiliate program (e.g. Movies Anywhere), then you are not eligible for the 4K upgrade, even though that purchased movie may be accessible through the regular Apple apps, or vise versa. That is the exception.

Thanks guys but maybe I was not clear. In the UK store you can buy SD, HD and 4k

films. When apple introduced 4k (apple TV) in 2017 they said they would upgrade

films (eligible) to 4k. I want to know if that still applies as other posts

here and general net discussions are unclear and I have emailed apple who told

me the process for watching films on apple TV (!) I am thinking of getting 4k

apple TV to go with my 4k TV.

Whatever is announced next week would have no bearing on this. It is due to the agreement with the providers and nothing is going to change in regards to how this works.

That information would also apply to any purchase, and does not apply solely to the free upgrades. For example, if a provider decides to remove a title or make a modification you can lose access to that title in the cloud. That is why it is always recommended to download and backup all purchases.
