On my desktop I changed the icon pictures of my folders, a week later instead of showing a picture, it showed the png with a camera photo. I removed the image and tried re-inserting it but it didn't work. Lastly I tried converting the PNG image to an ICNS but it still didn't work. Does anyone know how to get my personalised icons back?

Click on the Desktop, click on View in the menubar, click on Show View Options. On the panel that opens up make sure the box marked Show icon preview is checked, if it is already checked then uncheck it and check it again.
Dis you uncheck them and check them again, you could try a Restart if you haven't tried that. If none of that works then it may be a corrupt preferences file.
Again click on the Desktop, then click on Go in the menubar, click on Go To Folder now enter the text
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
press Go. A new Finder window will open with the file highlighted, drag it onto your Desktop.
Restart your Mac, a new Finder preferences file will be generated, now make sure Show icon preview is checked and see if this has resolved the problem.
Boot into Safe Mode, Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac, and check to see if the icons display there. If not try changing one. Then reboot normally.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.
Just figured it out, I:
1.) Right clicked on one of my folders
2.)Went to folder action setup
3.)Then add the image "Image-Add Icon.Scpt
So are all items on your desktop (folders and files) not showing icon previews. For example jpeg files, do you see the generic icon or the actual image, or is it just folders that don't display your preferred icon.
I still have 66.46 GB left. Is that the same as the space on my hard drive?
Yes, both boxes were ticked and it still doesn't seem to work... Thanks any way.
I tried a reboot of my computer (Holding shift while turning on) as well as unblocking the boxes and regenerating the Finder Preferences, but nothing seems to work. Thank you for trying though.
Just as a clarification to anyone who may be reading Sophie's solution, after right-clicking on a folder, you need to scroll down the list to the "Services" menu option, and THEN select "Folder Action Setup..." in the "Services" submenu.
Very interesting, Sophie, until you pointed this out, I was unaware of any of this. I need to study this feature further, because I have a lot of custom folder icons on a lot of my folders on my external drives, and the icons are often disappearing.
Yes. That is an indicator that there is less space on your hard drive.
