Greyed out partition option on disk utility

Hi,

I'm running Mac OS Mojave 10.4.3. I have a new external transend HD and I would like to partition it. I was able to Erase and format it to Mac File system but it will not let me partition it. I have not had problems with this on earlier versions of Mac OS. I don't understand why the function is not available.

Make sure Disk Utility's "View" is set to "Show All Devices" and when you formatted the drive the scheme was set to GUID.

Some time ago Disk Utility was (de-)enhanced. :( You need to do the following.

  1. In the top left corner make sure in the View menu that 'Show all devices' is selected
  2. Now you will see the 'parent' device for the external drive, select this
  3. Now you will be able to select the Partition button

The issue is you can partition an entire drive but you cannot partition a partition, hence the need to first select the parent i.e. entire drive.
