EXTREMELY SLOW BOOT / START UP - 2 MINUTES AND 19 SECONDS - MACBOOK PRO 15'' Intel Core i7, late 2013, 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM, MOJAVE

HI, as said in the title, I have a MACBOOK PRO 15'' Intel Core i7, late 2013, 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM, I am a careful and experienced user of macs (since 1999), so I always take care of my machines, doing several procedures in order to make them as fast and neat as they can be.

I upgraded the Mac OS X until El Capitain and stayed there for a considerable amount of time, my computer used to take 12 seconds to BOOT, amazing... As I use the computer everyday (music production, internet browsing, email, etc..) I rarely shut it down, so I commonly put it to sleep and only once a month I take the lighting cable from the power supply in order to drain the battery. My computer is now almost 5 years (bought it in June 2014) and only has 144 battery cycles and it still lasts 3 hours with average use.

A few weeks ago, with no apparent cause (no new software installed, nothing), I did shut down the computer and since then the start up takes 2 minutes and 19 seconds... I did all of the procedures I know to see if it would get back to the normal boot up time... still it takes this time...

Yesterday I updated the OS to MOJAVE in hopes that it would solve the problem or at least cut some time in the start up, but it didn't, in fact it added more time, it used to take 2 minutes and 2 or 3 seconds, now it takes 2 minutes and 16 seconds / 19 seconds...

I have 80GB of free space, no login items, I have reseted NVRAM, I verified and repaired disk permissions with Disk Utility, I constantly use CleanMyMac, I always refresh caches, etc... I did all the procedures one can find here and more (youtube videos et al)...

Does anyone know what could be the problem? Any suggestions / solutions?

Thanks in advance!

All My Best,

JSCASTRO

I constantly use CleanMyMac,

This app is known to cause nothing but issues- uninstall it. Use the official uninstaller.

Go from there.

Boot into Recovery (Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities>  Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD. If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.

Quit Du and from the menu reinstall the macOS on top of your existing macOS for a renewed copy/ user data files are left in place.

Always advised to have a current backup plan.

I would create a boot clone of your system onto an external drive. Boot off this externally and test your system.

It is not to say the SSD is having problems. Erasing/partitioning/formatting the internal drive and reinstalling a new copy of Mojave. Test. If all is well Restore your data form a backup.

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

Hi Leroy,

thanks for the suggestion! As I said I already run DU and no errors were found... I will do it again...

Regarding CleanMyMac I didn't knew this (when I said constantly, I meant frequently to be more precise, every month a few times, not everyday or week), I will uninstall it and try what you say, hope you are right!

I'll get back with the results!

Thanks!

Hi Leroy,

Done what you said, uninstalled cleanmymac, run DU and gave instructions in recovery mode to reinstall Mojave... after 2 hours the reinstallation process hasn't finished yet, and the computer is stuck for more than one hour in the apple logo with the progress meter nearly concluded but not progressing at all, it stopped completely... is this normal?

how much time does it take?

if the computer stays like this is there any command to reinitiate the process or at least restart / restore to the computer as was??

waiting to hear from you asap

Leroy, thanks for the suggestion, but the first time doing the reinstall the computer froze... so I did everything again, boot on recovery, run DU and FIRST AID and then reinstalled Mac OS X MOJAVE via the menu of the recovery mode. It took 45 minutes approx. made a restart after it finished and everything is the same, it takes 2 minutes and 10 seconds (it is 6 to 9 seconds faster)... still an absurd amount of time...

Any ideas of other suggestions people=? Thanks in advance!!

deggie, did the verbose boot, couldn't quite grasp what's the issue... read something about audio channels.. but the verbose mode showed data only half way through the start up process, then went into the apple logo mode...

getting really frustrated with this... just wanted to know what is going on...

Thanks for the advices!

Hi Leroy!

Thanks for the suggestion, I was avoiding such drastic measures, but it seems the last and wiser thing to do in order to understand what is causing this significant booting time...

Currently haven't the time to do it, due to professional compromises using the computer, but as soon as I am done I will have to erase the HD and restore my data from a backup!

Thanks!

Best Regards,

Hi Leroy,

just a final question regarding the TIME MACHINE back up, I don't use it so excuse my ignorance.

If I do a back up with TM and then with a bootable OS MOJAVE USB pen erase my HD, when I restore it does the TM also restores all the authorisations of the currently installed software? or do I have to re-install all my applications?

I need to know this before I decide to go ahead with this procedures!

Thanks in advance!

Best,

J.
