Does 480p resolution work on your Apple TV 4K?

I’ve got two Apple TV 4K’s and some Sony Bravia TV’s all manufactured 5-7 years ago. I can’t get 480p resolution to work on either Apple TV 4K with any television I’ve tried it on. And I’m wondering how widespread this problem is.

This isn’t a problem I’ve seen with the Apple TV 4th gens. Only the Apple TV 4K’s.

i realize most people aren’t gonna be using 480p with an Apple TV 4K. But if you’ve got one handy, do you mind trying switching to the 480p resolution to see if the Settings app will let you do that?

To change the resolution, just open the settings app. Then scroll down to “Video and Audio”. On the page the comes up, either “Resolution” or “Format” is the top item, click on that and change the resolution to 480p 60Hz. Then wait five seconds to make sure the switch successfully takes place.

What happens on my Apple TV 4K’s is the resolution will successfully switch. But then you get a dialog box with a countdown timer. By the time the countdown timer gets to 20 seconds, the screen resets and I get another dialog box saying there was a problem and the Apple TV’s switching back to the old resolution.

If you try it for me and report whether or not the resolution switch was successful as well as the TV manufacturer and as much as you as you about the model off the top of your head (like maybe all you know is that it’s a Samsung about five years old?), I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

You do realize this setting is a negotiation between the Apple TV device and the TV, right? The only possible outcome of your test is that some TVs do not support 480p, even if the Apple TV 4K does support it.

You know you can view content of 480p without changing the resolution of the devices to that. Just set it to the default/native resolution of the HDTV, and it will be scaled.

I live in PAL country, and this TV shows its target market in capabilities. My Apple TV 4K settings options show 576p SDR 50Hz (16:9) and 640×480 SDR 60Hz (4:3) at the low end of the spectrum, but not 480p. Both work on this non-Sony TV.

Urquhart, thanks for checking.

I’m trying to work with Apple Support in this issue, And they have acknowledged there’s a bug in the Apple TV 4K supporting 480p. So it’s not the case that either the TV supports the resolution or it will work fine. The bug was introduced with the release of tvOS 12.1. They are just being squirrelly with me about how widespread the issue is. And I’m wondering if I can get some feedback about how widespread it is on the forum.
