Apple USB-C Digital AV Adapter - NO Sound via HDMI

I recently purchased the Samsung monitor U32J59x. I'm able to connect my macbookpro 13 inch late 2016 model to it.

I get the correct resolution @30Hz 61-inch (3840 x 2160)

I'm missing sound though. I've gone through all the steps I found in the internet. Nothing is working.

I'm inclined to think this is an adapter issue because it doesn't recognize the sound connection as HDMI, because while the adapter recognizes the device the output in the preferences shows type as Display Port for U32J59x NOT HDMI.

I've gone through other resets and all with coreaudio etc ... Now I have no choice but to exchange my display.

Painful experience considering Apple should make something like this simple.

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

Thanks for this new information but Samsung documentation was a bit hazy. Now does this still mean that HDMI sound is not supported? In any case I will test out some other monitors with speakers.

Thanks a lot.

Changing the Volume setting

You can adjust Volume by moving the JOG button left or right, if no OSD menu is displayed.

  • ― The displayed image may differ depending on the model.
  • ― If the audio quality of a connected input device is poor, the Auto Mute function on the product may mute the sound or cause choppy audio when applying the headphones or speakers. Set the input volume for the input device to at least 20% and control the volume using the volume control (JOG button LEFT/RIGHT) on the product.
  • ― What is Auto Mute?
  • The function mutes the audio to improve sound effect when there is sound noise or when the input signal is weak, usually due to a problem with the volume of an input device.
  • ― To activate the Mute function, access the Volume control screen, then use the JOG button to move the focus down. To deactivate the Mute function, access the Volume control screen, then increase or decrease the Volume.

Yeah... you may be correct. It could be an adapter issue. I'd hold off on exchang that display, though, but that's just me. Apparently Apple has disabled audio through the HDMI port and DisplayPort, permanently, as to why, I don't know. If HDMI audio was available it'd show up either in Sounds/Alerts....play sound through..... or in Audio MIDI setup....you could try this....

that's the best I can do for now....I'm just a user here same as you. Please note-this is not an apple supported thing, and I don't work for apple..... etc

You’re welcome. Someone probably makes a usb-c to hdmi adapter that supports audio output... just not Apple. And it depends on your model of macbook pro too. The 2014-2016 seem to be ok, but the newest one? Better check the label for compatibility. Moshi? If it says newest model of macbook pro ok, then go with that, otherwise assume not

The monitor you mention has no speakers. So no way for it to output any audio directly. It does appear to have a headphone jack however.

Do you have anything plugged into that?

And no, this is a user to user forum. No Apple engineers are here nor do they come here to acknowledge issues.

Assuming this is the correct monitor: https://www.samsung.com/ca/monitors/uhd-ud970q-zc/

Specs indicate no speakers, no audio input, and only headphone support.

I assume plugging in a pair of headphones or 3.5mm compatible speakers there would work.

The Volume control would ostensibly be controlling the headphone output volume.

Lastly I want to clarify something. The adapter does output sound, I quickly tried plugging this to my TV (which I should've done before starting this) and voila we have sound outputting from my TV.

This was a monitor issue nothing more.

Thanks everyone
