Mac desktop shuts off halfway through the startup process. I tried to startup in safe mode but it does the same thing. What else can I try?

The first thing to attempt, is to reset the NVRAM. Please follow the instructions for that in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
When restarting in Safe Mode you may have to hold down the Shift key for up to 5 minutes to wait for your computer to launch. If the computer still will not start then you may have a damaged HD. Attempt to restart in the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and open Disk Utility . Run First Aid 2-3 times and if any errors appear that verifies my hunch. However the best method of telling if there is a problem with your HD is to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP to be professionally diagnosed.

Mac turns on, shows apple logo but shuts off halfway through the startup process. Holding the shift key to start up in safe mode isn’t working. Help please.
