SMB- can't move folder into symlink on samba share

Hey, I have a strange issue with a samba share. I setup a samba server on a little acer aspirerevo 1600 with XBMC Live installed (Ubuntu based). The samba share was working fine, but the internal hard drive ran out of space, so i hooked up a 2TB USB drive, and made a symlink in my samba share (the home directory for user: XBMC -- /home/xbmc). I have full read/write permissions inside the samba share and in every subdirectory. I did chmod -r 777 /home/xbmc. I also did that on the actual mount i made the symlink to -- chmod -r 777 /hitachi . I can read and write inside the symlink. I can copy or move files into the symlink just fine.
Here is where things get strange; when I take the same file that was just fine, and put it into a folder, /home/xbmc/test, and try to move "test" into the symlink, it fails. I get prompted by OSX to enter my computer credentials. It's not the same login screen as logging into the samba share; it looks like the login for authenticating an install. I have tried both my local credentials, and the samba credentials, and either way i get an error. I actually have samba setup to allow guest access, which is how i normally login, so i shouldn't be getting anything. Windows 7 and Windows Vista can both move the folder just fine. I can move the folder via SSH into the symlink just fine. I just can't move a folder into a symlink via samba.

Any ideas? Thanks!
