External monitor for MacBook Air 2017

I am interested in buying an external monitor for my MacBook Air 2017. I was wondering if I buy a monitor that has a higher resolution than the screen on my MacBook, will everything on the new monitor be in higher resolution. For example if a play a video on the new monitor, will it play in the higher resolution compared to if I played it on my laptop.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2017 MacBook Air as well. And I have hooked up an LG screen. Which runs at 3840x2160 resolution at 30 Hz. It's a 27 inch screen and everything looks much smaller compared to the Air's own screen.

If a movie plays in a higher resolution depends on the movies own resolution :) Full HD or 4K? Definitely. Good old DVD, better watch that on the Air's screen. It's pretty tiny on my UHD screen. Of course I can magnify it, but quality suffers :)
