Messages app opens in last conversation rather than conversation list

My messages app opens in the last conversation I was in rather than opening in the conversation list. This issue was fixed prior to updating to an XS Max with iOS 12.1.4. Is there a setting for this? I have been searching for a couple weeks now and have had no luck.

I know that is the default setting for the Messages app but prior to upgrading to the new phone and iOS 12 and having to reset all setting it worked the way I explained. My daughter also updated to a new phone and iOS 12 without having to reset all of her settings and her messages still behaves the way I like. I just cannot remember or figure out which setting it was that changed the behavior of Messages. Does anyone else know how?

How/where the Messages app has to do with how you closed it. If you were in a conversation and did not go back to the Messages list, then close the Messages app, it will open to that last conversation you were in. The only time that would change is if you force closed the app, which will then force it to open in the Messages list. This is normal operation unless you are referring to something unique to the Xs Max. Messages has always operated this way. I am referring to the iOS Messages app, and not Facebook Messaging or other messaging apps.
