Does Apple have a secure recycle program for destroying old devices?

I have a completely dead 1st generation iPad that I would like to recylce. It's worth virtually nothing on eBay, and I'm pretty sure not eligible for trade-upgrade at Apple or AT&T. This device has photos, files, and passwords which I have no way of wiping. I'm concerned that if it fell into the wrong hands, a savvy hacker could access my personal data. Does Apple securely destroy and recycle old devices? Or does anyone know of an outfit that offers a secure and green end to dead devices?
