What should my iphone and ipad be set to for texting, Apple ID, Phone number, or both? What would the difference be and why would I want one or the other. Also, They are set to re-ring once and only ring for the original message.

You are welcome. If you want to send to someone not using an Apple device, you must text them. That requires the phone number. If sending to someone with an Apple device that is using Messages, you can use either the email address or the phone number. You choose which is primary by going to Settings/Messages/Send & Receive/Start New Conversations from.

That's good advice so far, but I still need more. You said I need the phone number to text. I have the phone set with both. I don't know the difference of when you need one or the other. I don't know what they do. Also, I don't know how to make one primary and which one to choose and why. Thanks Eric.
thanks Eric, that clears it up. I'm still not sure what the difference between texting and messaging is, but it's probably not important as long as it works. it just seems a little silly. thanks for your explanation.
You need the phone number to text. You can set it up with both and then set one as the primary.
