Screentime bug?

Hi

My wife and I installed screentime on my son and daughters ipads. We were shocked to find the allow inapp purchases and no password setting on by default !? My son just overnight has accumulated 1000 dollars AUD in inapp purchases for NBA 2K app. My wife contacted apple and said there is nothing they can do and will not refund....this is grossly unfair and very irresponsible by apple to allow this setting to be on by default. I would suspect a lot of parents would be experiencing this. Can you confirm if this is a design intention to allow this OR is this a bug?

iPad, iOS 12

You're entitled to your opinion. You can even let Apple know what you think here:

The advice to contact iTunes is correct. But to answer your question if this is a bug or not, the answer is no. A Screentime Passcode does not create itself. It has to be created in order for one to be effective. It would be advisable for you to use Family Sharing and Parental Controls to ensure something like this doesn't happen in the future.

No its apples fault. By allowing an unsecure setting to be a default.

Lets just play out this scenario....

Lets just say apple designed it by having screentime by default having a password....worse case...kid goes and buys something...password prompt appears. DANG...need to ask mum and dad for the password....RATHER THAN allowing the kid to purchase inapp purchases til their hearts content and racking a $1000 bill. ...seriously dude, where is your logic??

No, it's not. Unless you give a device to a child, with a credit card, without employing Parental Controls and locking their ability to use that credit card. Again, you had the choice and option to put a passcode lock on their devices. You didn't, yet you want a scapegoat, which I get, but this was all within your control from the very beginning.

As Idris provided, let Apple know your thoughts. Arguing with fellow users on a user to user only forum is pointless.

The ipad was originally designed and still defaulted to be a portable portal to iTunes content. It was meant to be used by adults - which is why it’s designed for a single user with an Apple ID. And as with many app developers, the presumption is that purchases will be made. Which is one reason many apps encourage you to give them a payment method ‘just in case’. That is a common thing anymore.

The burden is on the users to understand the tech they use and how to use the tools provided to lock out or enable features as they wish.

Screen Time is a recent addition to the device in response to the growing number of parents that choose to purchase an iDevice and give it to their children. iPads are not the only choice. There are many kinds of tablets out there, some geared totally towards kids, others not. It’s up to the consumer to do their research and make the purchase that best serves their needs. It’s also on the consumer to do their research and read manuals etc to fully understand the tech they are using.

I won’t comment as to whether it’s good or bad to have things defaulted to on or off, largely because, at the end of the day, we’re just users like you. We have ZERO power over anything apple does. Many participants here have spent years learning the ins and outs of devices and choose to share that knowledge with others.

You may have a valid point about what should or should not be defaulted to on, but this is not the correct place to share that. You’re basically shouting into the wind. Using the feedback link that has been provided is the best way to share your thoughts and concerns with Apple. All feedback is read and logged and if Apple will choose to change their mind about defaults it will come from logged issues, not forum posts. (In other words, make the feedback and give them the numbers to encourage them to rethink defaults)
