We have just had a power outage of about 10 seconds and while all the appliances in the room such as a phone, clock, radio and a fish tank filter all went off my iMac (Retina 5K 27-inch 2017) continued working - how?
Does it have some sort of short term back-up?
I was still typing and reading mail and the Mac was behaving as normal.

It probably has a pretty sophisticated power supply that can run on low voltage, has some filter capacitors that supply some energy storage and might even have some lap-top like power save modes, which all combined kept it alive for a while.

Hi Keith. Thank you for your reply. Actual could that be possible as it's one of the reasons you have to unplug TV boxes (like SKY) from the mains and leave for a minute before plugging them back in. It is to drain any energy which may be stored in a capacitor. Simply switching off on the appliance retains some power.
I am guessing, that there was about 10 V of leakage and that it was not a full power out, that was nough to turn off most oter appliances, but the Mac has a wide ranging DC-DC converter that can draw useful power from a low voltage - again, this is just a guess.
There is no backup battery in iMacs. Once posibility if the power did not fail in the entire house is the iMac was on a different circuit. It happens here on occasion.
No. There is no battery backup in an iMac.
Uh, none of mine do. They just shutdown without AC.
Thanks for your reply. Very bizarre or odd wiring as the appliances that went off are right next to the computers but in a different socket. Maybe I'm plugged into my neighbours supply!!
Our house has DIY wiring by the previous owners. They had no clue.
