When I try to backup and sync my ipad with iTunes it tells me, iTunes could not backup because of backup session failed.

Make sure your iTunes software is up to date. Delete previous backup if there's one. Try again.
Try quitting everything and restart the computer and the iPad. Also try a different USB port and/or a different cable if you have one available.
This did not solve my problem.
Now a tag comes up and reads, "The software required for communications with iPods is not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair it?"
Everything is up to date. Now I get the same message for my iphone 8 Plus
