Apple Pay not working at Subway

I have an iPhone XS and an Apple Watch Series 4. Both have Apple Pay set up, and I have successfully used Apple Pay from both devices at several different stores with no problem. Neither the Apple Watch nor the iPhone will work using Apple Pay at Subway. I used to have an Android phone and used Google Pay at Subway at least once a week for a couple years, so I know the Subway terminals "can" work with NFC payments, but for some reason they don't work with my iPhone or Apple Watch. I submitted an issue to Apple regarding this problem, but have not heard anything. The cashiers know about the NFC terminals, but they also can't find anything wrong. I thought maybe it was the card selected on my Watch and iPhone, so I took out the physical card from my wallet and used that at the terminal. That did work, so I don't think the underlying card was an issue. I have tried this at more than one Subway and get the same problem, so I'm leaning toward thinking this is less of an Apple Pay problem and more of a Subway issue, but regardless of the cause, I just wish it would work.

I found out what went wrong. The good news is that Apple Pay on my Apple Watch seems to be working properly. Using Discover card on my Watch and iPhone did not work at Subway, but did work everywhere else. Using the physical Discover card at Subway worked at the payment terminal. I tried a different card which was in my Apple Pay wallet, and that did work at Subway. I now know that Apple Pay does work at Subway, but I still find it strange that Discover on Apple Pay does not work at Subway. All is well.
