Hi Gary,
A search on duckduckgo for 'checkbook register template for Numbers' (without the quotes) brought up a few hits, including this:
The formula shown is the only one I discovered in a rief exploration.
The table seems to have been originally created in MS Excel (it opens with an alert message that the font Calibri—a Microsoft font that is the default font for excel and Word (or was at the time)—has been replaced with a similar font available on my Mac), then imported into Numbers '09, and saved from there.
Your current version of Numbers should open the file without difficulty, and ask, on your first attempt to enter or edit the document, if you want to work on a copy of the file or upgrade the file to the current version. Tell it to go ahead, and carry on.
You'll find the downloadable file at https://www.freeiworktemplates.com/2012/11/large-checkbook-register-template-for-numbers/
Choose the "iWork '09 version" from the three versions listed. Ignore the large "GO NOW," "START NOW," or "DOWNLOAD" buttons in the adspace above and below the table.
Also found in that duckduckgo search was a link to this 2017 response by Wayne Contello to a similar question here in Apple Support Communities: Numbers checkbook register template - Apple Community
Wayne offers step by step instruction on constructing two types of check register in Numbers, one with a single column in which to list incoming and outgoing amounts, the other with separate columns for debit and credit amounts.
My own choice would be to follow Wayne's example, which adheres more closely to Numbers conventions and features than the Excel based table discussed above.
Regards,
Barry

Highly recommend having a look at the 'Personal Budget' template at File > New in your menu. It's not a full-fledge check book register, but it is well designed for Numbers and, with a little tweaking, meets the needs of many users.
You can also try this simple check book register (Dropbox download).
