Desktop icon won't stay in finder sidebar

I like to have the Desktop in my list of favorites in the finder sidebar. I have tried multiple time to drag it there, and also to click the box in the finder preferences "show in sidebar."

sometimes it disappears in a few minutes, and it always disappears after a restart.

Hello 203elvis,

Thanks for the post in Apple Support Communities. I understand you're having an issue with the Finder sidebar, and I'm glad to assist.

Does this happen only with the Desktop folder, or have you found the same thing happening with other folders as well?

Do you use iCloud Drive with your Desktop or Documents folders? If so, make sure that iCloud Drive is checked under Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and see if this helps: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive

If you don't use iCloud Drive, your next best bet is to test this in a temporarily administrator account to see if you can replicate the issue there. This will tell you if it's system-wide, or if it's user account-specific. Check out this resource for the steps: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

I hope this helps get you started.

Kind regards.

I messed around with icloud last month, just before this started happening. I was looking at using it for backup, but then realized how much data it was moving off the mac, including the desktop.

I cancelled the upgraded storage, and tried to turn it all off. Perhaps there is a setting there still interfering? I just looked and the icloud drive is not checked in my system preferences.

thanks all....

so I opened the guest user account, added the desktop in the finder sidebar preferences, logged out and then reopeneand had no issues with it disappearing.

I'd already figured out where the files got moved to, and have them all restored to my user desktop folder.

But that's the folder that now won't stay in sidebar: in fact it does this weird thing: in the finder;preferences;sidebar, when I click desktop, it unselects itself immediately. I click again, and it will stay selected, and appear in the side bar until the next time I log off, when its gone again.

as noted desktop is fine, files are all restored after getting moved off, i've disabled all icloud synchs of documents and desktop....
