There are utilities that will do this for you; my personal favourite is the Big Mean Folder Machine :) You can find it on the Mac App Store or through a web search.
It will do exactly what you're looking for and can even split those files based on when the photos were taken, type of file and so on.

Yes, the several large folders involved all contain unique name strings anything up to 19 characters long. So far I have been scrolling down a folder with the mouse window after window until I have highlighted a thousand or so images and then clicked control/command/N to create a new sub-folder. This is becoming somewhat wearisome. Is there some way of setting up some method of counting a specific number of files and then automatically creating a sub-folder for them?
Is there some point to this organization? Some rule as to how these folders are to be named and what files to put in each?
It seems rather ad hoc to put stuff in folders of 1000.
If you tell us more about your workflow we may be able to give more adequate suggestions.
We could devise a simple script to automate this, but how many files are we talking about? 20000? It is still far quicker to move them by hand than it is to devise, write and test the script...
Software must understand patterns in file and folder naming that allow it to successfully move specific files into properly named folders that clue as to what it contains. A nineteen character folder name is unwieldy.
I want to apply some other apps to the image files in question. I want to weed out multiple and defective copies of the images and ultimately divide them up into subject categories. Some of the apps I have tried using for this cannot cope with these large folders, which in some cases comprise hundreds of thousands of photographs of paintings, drawings, sculptures and miscellaneous art objects. One of the apps I have used for renaming files might be able to cope with changing all the file names to simpler numerical sequences, I suppose, but I would still have to scroll through the files window by window.
Have just looked at Big Mean Folder Machine recommended by G.C.Thompson and think I will buy it from the Apple Store and give it a go. I already have that app developer's Better Finder Rename 10 and it works OK.
Many thanks for your help.
Applies to Mojave as well…
Do the filenames in the single, large folder contain unique name strings that can be used in the creation of their respective subfolder name, with subsequent moving of the files into that sub-folder?
Many thanks for the helpful suggestion. Will hie me to the Apple Store and purchase the Big Mean Folder Machine forthwith.
Agreed – A nineteen character folder name is definitely unwieldy! I am going to do something about that in due course. Thanks for the suggestion.
