You can’t use this subscription service on the older iPods. Playback from the Apple Music subscription requires iOS 8.4 or later on iPod Touch (5th generation or later).
It also requires internet connectivity on the device itself, to be able to verify the subscription status, to stream from online sources, and to download from Apple’s servers directly onto the device.
