no available cars in carplay

When I go to settings/general/carplay, no available cars are shown (just rotating "loading" icon, which never loads). How can I get the phone to recognize my car?

iPhone SE, iOS 12

Yes, and this setup works normally with two other iphones of the same model, so I think maybe I have a setting wrong on my phone.
