Mojave 10.14.4 Google requires completing authentication in Safari - with excess rights

Updated to Mojave 10.14.4 and was shortly requested to go to Internet Accounts in System Preferences and authenticate my gmail account in Safari. Request is to "Enter the password for the account xxx.xxx@gmail.com". Google requires completing authentication in Safari.

Request requires usual login to Google (including 2FA) but then requests extraordinary permissions, including permanent deletion of all email, contact, calendars etc. I can see no justification for permitting this:

It is not Safari that is asking, it is macOS. Safari is just providing the interface.

I tried several things I saw posted on Apple discussion threads, including restoring a prior version of the mail app (which did NOT work for me). I just got off with Apple Support. She said the issue is GOOGLE's authentication requirements, not related to the MacOS system upgrade.

What worked for me was uninstalling and reinstalling my mail app, which still required me to authenticate in Safari. It worked, and I did not get sent into any loop.

I still believe there is something about MacOS and the app though because, although I was receiving emails in my AT&T account, my outgoing emails were getting hung up in the SENT box. So I uninstalled/reinstalled that one too.
