Why did a red x appear on my watch (series 4 cellular) when the watch is connected to my phone?

My phone and watch are paired/connected. Inside the house, they work fine. When I left the house, a red x appeared on my watch. Considering I have cellular, I don’t understand why I had the red x. Isn’t that the point of spending more for cellular? So you don’t need your phone?! I purchased the cellular so I would not have to take my phone with me when I run. This watch is pointless if the cellular does not work and I have to take my phone anyway.

If the Watch has been set up for cellular with your carrier, you may need to check with them to see why it is not connecting to the network when you leave the area of your paired iPhone. While it take take a minute to connect to the cellular network once you leave the area where your phone is, it should connect within that time frame. My Watch series 4 can connect within 30 seconds max.
