Managing storage/apps on multiple devices

Apps I add to my iPhone get added to my iPad. I'd like to delete them off my iPad (storage issues) but keep them on my iPhoneXS. How do I do that? Seems like stuff keeps getting duplicated in both places. While I appreciate that often, I don't always want that. Actually, I'd like to he asked - do you want these on all devices or on X device?

iPad, iOS 10

You don't have to have an app on your iPad and still keep it on your iPhone. Just put your finger on any app and hold it there until all the apps start to jiggle. Then tap the x at the top left of any app you don't want on your iPad and it will be removed. It will still remain on your iPhone. Many Apple pre-installed apps cannot be removed.
