How do I stop notification sounds from transmitting to bluetooth speaker?

If I get a text or call while listening to music on Bluetooth speaker, I get blasted as the notification sound plays on the speaker, loudly. I'm told that music play should pause, and only the phone should ring/beep, but can't find any setting to do this. My "Bluetooth setting" only allows me to connect/disconnect. Using Iphone 7, IOS 12

Mute the phone with the switch on the left side. This suppresses notifications that go to Bluetooth devices.
