Picture-in-picture video playback buggy since updating to 12.2. Other issues since updating.

Since updating to 12.2 on the iPad Pro that I bought around the end of 2018, picture-in-picture playback is no longer possible with the YouTube app. Since purchasing this thing, I hav3 been able to simply press the home button while watching Netflix and the little overlay video box would automatically pop up and continue playing whatever I was watching. This no longer happens and I can't figure out why not.

Youtube can can be played PIP, but the playback regularly keeps pausing every few seconds. This happens constantly as long as you continue trying to watch PIP.

Another thing...

Something I do pretty much every night is fall asleep with something playing on either Netflix or YouTube, I turn my screen off and just listen to the audio untilI pass out. Since applying the 12.2 update, I can no longer do this. Netflix simply won't play with the screen turned off anymore, while YouTube will play for a few seconds–maybe a minute or two–and then starts pausing constantly like described above in the PIP issue.

Between the buggy WiFi connectivity and now this, I'm beginning to wish I could return this device.

Some suggestions to try…

Since updating to 12.2 on the iPad Pro that I bought around the end of 2018, picture-in-picture playback is no longer possible with the YouTube app.

Watch YouTube videos in Safari instead of the app. This has the advantage of not being limited to PIP only in the YouTube app. To initiate PIP in Safari tap the video player to display the player controls. Tap the fullscreen button in the lower right.

Tap the PIP button in the upper left.

To initiate PIP while in the Netflix app, while a video is playing, either swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen with one finger or use a four finger pinch.

For the Netflix app, while a video is playing or paused in fullscreen, press the iPad’s Sleep/Wake button. The screen will go dark and the video if playing will stop. Press the Sleep/Wake button again. Tap the play button on the player screen overlay. Press the Sleep/Wake button once again. The screen will go dark but the video sound will keep playing. The player screen overlay:

Okay, so the problem with the Netflix app not working PIP seems to be intermittent, sometimes simply pressing the home button or swiping up from the bottom will open the PIP overlay, but others nothing you do will get it to open. The Netflix app will not play at all with the screen off. Whether I press the sleep/wake button or swipe down from the top while watching a video, playback will not continue after you turn the screen off. If you turn the screen back on and try to press play on the lock screen overlay, nothing happens.

Also, in my first sentence of the first post, I meant to say Netflix app, not YouTube. I only use YouTube in Safari and never use the app. Hopefully I can describe the YouTube problems a little better here:

What Roote suggested for playing YouTube videos PIP and with the screen off are both what I normally do, but since the newest update they has become undoable. For PIP, the overlay opens like usual, but playback will pause after a few seconds. If you press play to continue playback it will pause again a few seconds later. This happens constantly until you give up and turn video off. The same thing happens when you try to play YouTube videos with the screen off.
