Unable to launch Apple Diagnostics

I encountered a (recoverable) kernel panic on my MBP this morning when waking my system after upgrading to Mojave from ElCapitan just a few days earlier. In order to figure out if there may be hardware issues I attempted a restart while holding the D key in order to launch Apple Diagnostics. I however was greeted by this error message:

Error: 0x8000000000000003, Cannot Load 'EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi'

Status: 0x00000003

I am able to restart and launch OS X - thus the system is operational. But obviously something strange is going on.

Question: IF I create a bootable drive will I be able to launch diagnostics or AHT from there?

Thanks in advance.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

˜What all 3rd party extensions are you running?

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

There is also Malwarebytes...

That is too funny - two people with the same problem and (almost) the same setup battling the same problem at almost the same time :-)

Unfortunately I have not been able to solve this problem and after two days of banging my head against this wall came to the same conclusion: there's something in the boot process that prevents the proper files to be loaded. I did set the right permission/ownership - I blessed the folder - everything is located where it should be but AHT fails.

FWIW - I love my old MBP as it was top of the line (750GB SSD and 16GB of RAM) when I bought it. I love all my ports that I use on a regular basis and which are now missing on those new fangled 'naked' MacBooks. Plus it drives my gorgeous 32'' Apple Cinema display that is incompatible with newer MacBooks.

Which is why I am fighting tooth/nails to keep it running. Fortunately the system is still humming along nicely with no apparent hardware degradation but if there are parts that are getting old and are about to break then I want to know beforehand so I can get them fixed while they are still available.

Perhaps an Apple systems engineer will have mercy with us and shed some light on this issue.

My 2012 iMac running Mojave 10.14.4 does not boot to diagnostics with only the D key, just a white screen. Option D gives me the Error: 0x8000000000000003, Cannot Load 'EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi'

Status: 0x00000003

I have even done an erase and reinstall, an Apple Senior Advisor said it was a firmware issue and that a erase and reinstall would fix the issue, but it did not. Prior to contacting apple I did all the troubleshooting possible. I am considering requesting that engineering take a look at this. I have seen on other sites that it could be the memory/RAM about to fail, but before going in for a repair (it's vintage, I know, I would have to go to a 3rd party, and I do have one) I just want to confirm that is really what is going on.

Any other ideas?

I'm having the exact problem. I was able to conduct an Apple Diagnostics Test in December 2018 (hardware passed after running full test), but after several updates to the current—as of April 2019—macOS Mojave 10.14.4, I decided to run another test in April 2019 and received the same error and status messages as you

(Error: 0x8000000000000003, Cannot Load 'EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi'

Status: 0x00000003).

I did a reinstallation of macOS Mojave 10.14.4, but no joy.

That's good to know that an erase/reinstall won't even work. I did a reinstallation of macOS Mojave 10.14.4 which didn't work. What you wrote (presented in italics) happened to me too. The common denominator seems to be the update to macOS Mojave 10.14.4

"Mojave 10.14.4 does not boot to diagnostics with only the D key, just a white screen. Option D gives me the Error: 0x8000000000000003, Cannot Load 'EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi'

Status: 0x00000003"

Got the exact same issue here. Got an MB Pro Mid 2012 & Mid 2009, both running High Sierra via 'patching'. Can no longer access diagnostics on either of them - just get a blank screen with..... Error: 0x8000000000000003, Cannot Load 'EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi' Status: 0x00000003. Took the 2012 MB Pro to my local mac repair shop (not an Apple Store) and they couldn't figure it out either. Not sure the culprit is Mojave - as I'm still running High Sierra 10.13.6. It's all very weird though.

@Lexham & Runway: Just so you understand what's going on: xr7zk2001 did point out a few comments ago that Mojave makes changes to the boot ROM. Therefore even if you revert back to High Sierra or anything else these changes prevail (as the other versions do not affect the boot ROM).

Lexham: did you step back from Mojave to High Sierra or did this happen to you without ever installing Mojave?

Anyway, it seems a lot of people are dealing with this problem and I hope Apple is paying attention.

Incidentally I spent a good half an hour back and frothing with an apple rep on live chat, who first suggested an os clean install of Mojave (which I highlighted by linking here seems that no OS install will revert firmware) so was then told to go to a Mac shop for further help (ie to be told hmmmm we don't know how to fix this, but this shiny new Mac will work fine, and only cost 2 grand)

I have the same problem. I booted with the D-key down, and got a white screen. Then with option-D, and got

Error: 0x8000000000000003, Cannot Load 'EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi'

Status: 0x00000003

This stayed on the screen for minutes, and then the normal startup resumed. About This Mac gives:

macOS Mojave

Version 10.14.4

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012)

(etc.)

Software Update: Your Mac is up to date — macOS Mojave 10.14.4

Are we sure it's a Mojave problem?

I have the same issue and it started a month ago when I was still using Sierra OS.

Now I've upgraded to Mojave and the problem is still there.

The system is running normally, except for the Diagnostics issue.

Forgive my ignorance in the subject, but if the BootROM is screwed what does it imply? Any security issue?

May 2, 2019 3:45 AM in response to BDAqua

Well for a start if it is boot ROM issue THERE IS WAYS to revert but I think none of the methods to do so, can be done within the Mac ecosystem if your boot rom install happens successfully (as from what I read, intel Macs that install firmware without an issue null any outdated install, like a version check and, if boot ROM= bootable, then installer of old boot rom version = denied)

It looks like it might be the case that having the necessary files on a linux bootable OS drive can be used to force write to the flash rom (Advanced level system flashing, can be dangerous) but to do this and not brick your Mac will also be a large risk, with factors to consider such as ensuring you have your system running a specific OS version and only flashing a 100% guaranteed compatible boot rom file.

It is all risk though and it is something I feel that due to the core nature in which this boot rom has borked so many MACs Apple Hardware Test access that a fix should really com from Mac, but to get it will require pressure from all affected users (due to the nature of many users, many people probably have this issue and don't even know ie, not very technical and have never even really used boot to AHT mode or anything like that)
