ipad not turning off when cover is closed

my brand new ipad 2018 does not turn on/off when the cover is opened/closed. I am on ios 12 and although there is an button for lock/unlock, it is only visible when searched for in search bar and does nothing if pressed. I am using a 3rd party cover. is there any fix for this?

iPad, iOS 12

hi there,

there is no lock/unlock button in that directory.

when "unlock" is searched in settings, an option saying 'lock/unlock' is shown but nothing is done if it is pressed.

I have attached screenshots of both situations.

Thank you for your help

Hi there apau1399,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand your iPad doesn't wake and sleep when you open and close the cover, and I’ll be happy to help with this.

To resolve this issue, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and turn on Lock/Unlock. See if that resolves the issue for you.

Best wishes.

Are you absolutely certain the 3rd party case is designed to lock/unlock iPad? The way this setting works on any iPad is it won't show up if the case being used is not read as having the magnets built in to make the iPad lock/unlock. If the case has the magnets, they may be misaligned. You could try to re-position the case cover and see if that helps align the magnet to trigger the setting to appear.

from what I understand, the case has this function as it is specifically mentioned in the description and images by the seller, I've also contacted them and made sure. I thought that it was just a software bug as the option was visible when searched for but hidden otherwise. i'll try moving the cover around and see if anything happens or look into returning it. thank you for your help! :)
