pop up ads and unwanted pop up browsers and new pages.

For the a few weeks I have been dealing with multiple pop up ads and unexpected web browsers while using google chrome. It is time consuming and it is affecting my work flow and web experience. This morning I received a pop up browser from Applecare: "Your Mac is infected with 3 viruses. Our security check found traces of 2 malware and i phishing /spyware. System damage: 28.1%-Immediate removal required"

"The immediate removal of the viruses is required to prevent further damage. loss of Apps , Photos or other files. Traces of 1 phishing/spyware were found on your Mac with MacOS 10.12 Sierra."

"personal and banking information is at risk."

To avoid more damage click on 'Scan now' immediately. Our deep scan will provide help immediately!

2 minute and 42 seconds remaining before damage is permanent."

This popped up in a new window while workinG in google chrome. Is this legitimate or some BS?

BS.

Avoid phishing emails, fake 'virus' alerts, phony support calls, and other scams - https://support.apple.com/HT204759

Malwarebytes - There are different versions available depending upon what features you want. For a single removal without ongoing monitoring you can probably use the free version.

It can also depend upon the web sites you visit. Some less reputable sites will do a lot of this. Stop looking at them.

I hope you're simply experiencing a browser hijacking,

  1. I would suggest you remove all of Chrome Settings, by going to chrome://settings/ - then selecting the three line hamburger button and picking to Reset Chrome, remove all extensions you don't know of and check your /Applications folder for anything you do not recognize.
  2. If you have been properly infected with malware (not just ad-ware or a browser hijack) the only way to be %100 certain that it is off your system is to backup your user data and reinstall the entire machine. Most tools will clean a good amount of it, but if you're doing anything sensitive, CMD-R and erase it after you save all your work to an external drive.

Hi,

It is a scam, but they are right about your information being at risk

Use these links to reset Google Crome, but it might be best to uninstall it and reinstall it

https://support.google.com/chrome/search?q=clear+cookies

Download and run Malwarebytes Anti Malware For Mac using the link provided

https://www.malwarebytes.com

Use the following instructions to reset safari

Force Quit Safari by pressing  Command + Option + Esc keys.

Then restart Safari holding the Shift key.

Then Empty the Caches

Safari menu > Preferences > Privacy > Remove all website data. (This will also remove all history)

If you dont want to remove the History

Safari Preferences > Advanced

Check mark the Show Develop Menu then choose Empty Caches from Develop Menu .

Go to the Safari menu > Preferences... > Extensions. If you see any Extensions that you do not recognise or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.

Go to the Safari menu > Preferences... > Security, and ensure that Safari blocks both fraudulent websites and popups.

If the problem persists contact Apple Support
