I have 2GB of ram on my macbook pro. When I am watching a video, taking notes, and have a webpage open in the background, it starts getting pretty slow. Can I clear the ram somehow? Or do I need to just get more? Says I used 1.70GB of my 2GB I installed.

You do not say what exact Mac /model /year /size /retina is this ?
2GB today is hardly enough to do anything.
Best to buy RAM from reliable source with the exact specs.

As mentioned, yours can handle 8 GB and since it will perform better with matched pairs, I would get 2 x 4 GB. You also may have a very slow 5400 rpm spinning drive. You can look at the install instructions on this site, they are also a recommended RAM vendor:

Do not buy cheap value RAM as Macs are very finicky and it may not work.

Your computer can accommodate up to 8GB RAM if it is a Mid 2009 model.
You are swapping almost as much RAM as you have installed. As me tioned you need to post the exact model/year of your device.
I have a mid 2009 13”MacBook Pro. I really can’t afford a new one. It runs all my software fine, but I just need to run at least 3 programs at the same time.
I guess I have to because otherwise it won’t work. I really could use at least 4GB, but how much can I possibly install/would be enough. Above I mentioned my primary uses.
While viewing Activity monitor as you have posted, click the Memory column to sort by usage. Any culprits there?
Also click the CPU section and sort by CPU percentage. Any culprits there?
Actually I installed a Samsung 860EVO V-NAND 250GB SSD. The old one failed. This made the machine run a lot faster on its own.
