Hi,

As a troubleshooting method, check out this online help link that describes the procedure for importing from a tape based camera:

https://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.1/#/mov6af9c94c1

Sometimes it helps to start the tape running in the camera before starting to import.

If still no luck, try importing to your desktop with the Image Capture app on your Mac. From your desktop you can then import the clips into iMovie by dragging them.

Also, you can try importing into the Photos app (actually, the recommended way) and from there you can access the clips from within iMovie via the Photos item in the iMovie projects sidebar.

iMovie 10 doesn't import Mpeg-2 files. That's probably the issue. You should be able to import them to your desktop with Image Capture, or into the Photos app, and from there convert them to Mp4/AAC that iMovie likes. However, you said that neither Image Capture nor the Photos app recognizes the camera. The only thing I can think of is to doublecheck your cable set up, and computer slots, and make sure that everything is tight and functioning.
