Cannot upgrade Mac Os from Apple Store

Hi,

I have a Mini Mac with Lion 10.7.5. When I try to upgrade to either Sierra or El Capitan, I get an error message to the effect that it is not possible to download the app and I should check my internet connection. Internet is working fine, firewall is off, and there are no proxies enabled. I am connecting through a router, but I should add that I also tried to start the upgrade while tethering to my phone, resulting in the same error message. Can somebody help me?

Mac mini 2018 or later

The error message was 'the application you tried to download could not be downloaded. Check your internet connection and try again.' I solved it by using a different internet connection.
