Apple watch series 4 battery drain about 15% per hour without any active app

I have an apple watch series 4 and the battery can only last for about 6 hours after a full charge. I went to the apple store to have it diagnosed but nothing was wrong with the watch(at least this is what I was told based on the diagnose result). Also tried send it to the repair center for deep diagnoses but they cannot find any issue with the watch and just sent it back to me. I've tried unpair/repair the watch, set it up as new watch without installing any app on it, turn off background app refresh on the watch, disable wake screen on wrist raise etc. but none of them solve the problem. Apple customer service said there mush be some background app refresh that is draining the battery since nothing with the battery is wrong, but they cannot fix the issue or point out what app it is. The watch is basically useless at this point since I don't want to charge it every 6 hours. Any help is appreciated.

@TygerMane Have you tried reinstalling both phone and watch as new devices? I started having this same problem after the last update. I tried all the troubleshooting steps, turning just about everything on the watch off (including the screen), no extra apps installed, and my battery lasted no more than 6-8 hours. I have AppleCare+, so they did an express replacement even though they said the battery tested fine. The replacement started doing the same thing once I updated to the latest watchOS. In desperation, I finally wiped and reinstalled my phone as a new device, then paired the watch as a new device, and I now have 40-50% battery left after 12-14 hours. I still have lots turned off and no extra apps installed, but the watch is more usable now. I'm hoping the impending upgrade to watchOS 6 helps with battery life.

I hope this experience is different for you but I had my replaced under warranty in October. It seemed to be the solution but in less than 2 weeks it was back to the same experience. Now I have to do a Full Erase and Reset on it and I will get anywhere from 1-2 weeks of perfect results but than it slips back into the same patterns of dying before lunch even with little to no usage. I really hope they figure it out since it is definitely an issue caused by watchOS 6. But I'm not holding my breath because we have all seen over the years the respect they have for past product support and the fact they discontinued the 4 but kept the 3 gives me even less hope.

No issue, I understand! In my particular situation it seems that the last beta was my issue. I updated late night to the latest beta and from what I can tell my watch battery percentage is back to normal. It’s now 9:39pm and I’m just now at 71%. I usually get down around 50% by midnight. And it lasts throughout the next day. Hopefully your problems get addressed and fixed. Good luck!!

My last reply was considered off-topic, so it was removed. I’m posting again, leaving the controversial sentences out:

I’m really hoping OS6 does the trick. I thought my S4 battery life bad, doing virtually nothing drains 7-8% per hour. So I went to the Genius Bar and they tested it out - like others experienced hardware and battery are fine. After reading this thread it’s clear that this is screwed up for more than a couple of unlucky users. The only tip I received at the Genius Bar was to turn off background app refresh, but that did nothing. Today I spend 2 hrs chatting and on the phone with four apple support staff, re-testing again but remotely, just to arrive at the “ we can’t do anything else for you” from a senior advisor. Per last effort instructions I wiped the watch clean and completely set up as new watch - no change. With no modifications to the auto-setup (which does not include activity tracking, workout fitness tracking and heart rate monitoring). Frustrating. This seems completely unacceptable since the “up to” 18 hrs include 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use, and a 60-minute workout with music playback from Apple Watch via Bluetooth.

Update after a full day of use with the clean set up: 100% @ 7am, dead by 6:45pm, lasting less than 12 hours. (I kept track and I deliberately kept time checks to 13 times, got 29 notifications, used the breathing app for 1 min, controlled a 45 min podcast playing on my phone and nothing else.)

Over the next days I will remove non-native apps, turn off functions etc. and post the results of the changes. Hopefully this will help enlighten others with the same problem.

This is basically my experience as well. My rapid battery drain started right after updating my watch to 5.3, but then I exchanged it for a new one which shipped with 5.3, and the battery lasts 2 days on the replacement. The difference between the two watches is that the first one was made in the first half of this year. The replacement was made at a different facility, second half of the year.

This is a perplexing problem b/c if it is truly a bad batch of batteries, you would think that would show up in hardware diagnostic tests. Also there have been commenters who claim watchOS 6 has resolved this for them.

I wonder if it is possibly something to do with software update process? I would think apple could provide some function in the OS, or diagnostic app, which could log what processes/apps are using the most CPU time in a charge cycle. If the battery does not hold charge, and there is no log of any process running up the CPU, then (assuming normal display usage) it has to be that the battery is defective.

This is still happening to my s4. It drops about 10% an hour and I even tested it by laying the phone on the counter beside the watch for the entire day and just looked at it every hour and logged the time and battery percentage. I took it to the Genius Bar twice, the first time they did their diagnostics and agreed with me that the loss was unusual and very consistent at 10% an hour. Recommended I do all of the fixes mentioned here. I went home did all of that, wore it on my wrist for three days and then one day on the counter with no difference (10% an hour loss). Took it back in at this point they recommended a repair. They sent it in,The repair depot had it for one day and returned it saying nothing was wrong with the watch. I even gave them my log of the counter experiment. So disappointed in Apple. I have been a customer since 1984.

Tried all of the following advice so far and non seem to work for me.

Just gonna list it down so others can try and hopefully one of the advice might work for them.

  • Hard Restart Apple Watch
  • Reset and Setup as new
  • Let the Watch drain till 0 and charge it back up to 100%
  • Let the Watch charge for 2 days
  • Turn off Hey Siri in the Apple Watch
  • Turn off WiFi in Apple Watch
  • Delete the Noise App

Not sure if there are more but please add on to the list if you guys come across anything else that works, this will help readers to save some time looking though the comments I hope.

I began experiencing the same problem with my Apple Watch 4 a couple of days ago. Apple Support recommended un-pairing and re-pairing the watch to my iPhone XS. That completely resolved the issue. In fact, battery drain appeared to reduce to less than it was prior the start of the rapid battery drain. Very simple solution, at least in the case of my Apple Watch 4.

I have this issue and I've isolated it down to the 'Wake Screen on Wrist Raise'. With this feature turned off, my battery life lasts well over 24 hours... closer to 30 hours. With it turned on, my battery life lasts 12-14 hours.

I have disabled all of the apps and when we look at the diagnostics, I can see multiple actions on the 'Wake Screen' even in the middle of the night with the theater mode enabled. I have also seen very weird results in my activity rings each day, sometimes they complete with very little activity.

Workaround: Turn off Wake Screen on Wrist Raise... downside, Raise wrist doesn't work. you have to tap or press the crown to get the notice to show up when you get a notification.

Hi, I've had the same problem for months ...

100% battery, after a few minutes 80%, it takes me up to 6 hours, it's not possible !!

In these hours I do not receive phone calls without using it

I use it without, training, no application, sound notifications, only heart monitor active.

They made me reset, update, I solved nothing

Yesterday I called them for the second time, and after my protests.

Send courier to ship my S4 cellular for repair or replacement .....

I'm starting to be very disappointed with Apple ...
