Garageband will only use the built-in Mic

When trying to record it won't let the microphone I have plugged in record, and instead it just uses mic built in to my computer. I tried to change the input in my system preferences but there is no option for "built in input". What can I do to fix this?

The audio port on your MacBook Air is probably a 3.5 mm headphone jack with Support for Apple iPhone headset.

If it supports the iPhone headphones, you could use an input splitter to to use this headphone port as an audio input port, for example the iRig, or something similar to this:

The plug needs to show the three rings to work as a line-in as well as a line-out:
