transfer content from external hard drive to new mac

i want to transfer content from an external hard drive to a new iMac. Not sure how to go about it. I see my back up on Finder. but when i try to drag files across and open them, it wont let me as it says this modification is not allowed on a backup option

Is the external HD used for Time Machine? If so then you should connect the drive to your Mac and open Time Machine. In theTM preferences select that drive.


Now you can use Migration Assistant to bring over your user account and data from the TM backup to your new iMac.
