imovie effects

Help please. I have been searching for ages on how to add those little effect options that you can do from the iphone or iPad when loading to something like facebook, but on a computer. Like those little floating bubbles or shimmering stars, or border decorations. Is this even possible from iMovie from a desktop. Could someone please point me in the the right direction?. Thank you.

Hi, MinniMaz,

There are lots of things that you can do in iMovie to add special effects and decoration to your movies. Here are some of the things that I have done.

  1. Go to Window/Theme Chooser and you will find several themes that add interesting touches to your movie.
  2. A bonanza that I have found is to create a Trailer where you will have the option to choose many themes. You don't need to actually add any clips to the Trailer template. Once you have created the Trailer template and selected a theme, you can convert the Trailer to a movie (File/Convert Trailer to Movie) and use all of the theme features in whatever movie you want to make. Some of them are pretty cool.
  3. You can use the Picture in Picture feature to overlay your video clips onto any photo, background, or video to get an interesting look. So, for example, if you had a video of fireworks going off, you could overlay your clip onto it with Picture in Picture, resize the picture to make it a little smaller, and the fireworks would show around the edges of your clip, like an animated frame.
  4. There also are color filters that you can apply to your clips for a different effect.
  5. The Photos app has some slideshow themes that you can possibly adapt to your movie.

You might also check the online app store for apps that can provide some effects. Type in "video effects apps" in the app store search feature. If you find one, be sure that it will work with iMovie before you buy it. iMovie doesn't accept third party plug-ins. So you might have to create your effect separately in a format that iMovie supports, and then import it into iMovie.

Have fun with this.
