If there were grey-label Apple system discs included with the computer, they'd be
needed to erase and/or reinstall a new system. The disk utilities and other tools on
the bootable install DVD #1 are useful too, to fully erase content before a new install.
(or the system may be Lion 10.7, which was available on USB install flash drive.)
There are two iMac (intel) builds with the iMac5.1 designation; not an exact identifier.
One has 17-inch, the other 20-inch display. With different sales/EMC numbers.
You would need to use an install DVD disc to erase and reinstall an Mac system of the
correct vintage for this to work; but its so old now that it has little value to most users.
They shipped with Mac OS X 10.4, Tiger; both with same part # grey-label install DVDs:
•Original OS Mac OS X 10.4.7 (8K1106)
Later OS Mac OS X 10.4.8 (8N1430)
(Maximum OS Mac OS X 10.7.5)
These also could run Leopard 10.5(.8) or with DVD installer, and improved Snow Leopard
10.6(.8) the second one here is probably the better of all these said to work w/ early Macs.
Last newest Mac OS X they could run, was Lion 10.7.5. And you could still get Snow Leopard
10.6.3 on retail DVD from Apple (store) online; this vintage Mac doesn't upgrade to newer.
• Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple

Update steps past installer upgrade level are downloaded within the application; to 10.6.8.
The Mac OS X 10.6.3 retail DVD cost about $20. on order from Apple. (Lion was on special
install USB flash; that was path to last upgrade OS. ~ Earlier ones use system DVD installer.)

How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch . Published April 11th, 2013 9:32 PM EDT. For whatever reason, you have
decided that you want to reinstall the system from scratch, restoring your machine to an "out-of-the-box" state.
So if you had retail (not grey-label) Leopard 10.5 install DVD, that could work to put new
system on the old Mac you have; maybe even re-set an old password from the utilities
on the install disc to access older content before erasure. There is a clock battery that can
go flat which can affect these Macs, so may need to be replaced. That's on logic board.
