Apple ID sign in fail on Apple TV

My Apple ID password is not being accepted for sign in on Apple TV. I will put the correct password in and get an authentication code sent to my phone, but Apple TV doesn't prompt for the code or accepts the code but then brings me back to sign in when I try to rent a movie. I am able to watch trailers, so Apple TV itself seems to be functioning, but my Apple ID (which is no problem on my other devices) is not being accepted.
