The AirPort Extreme wireless base station could be used so long as the
operating system in the Mac can see and configure the base station.
Software in the Mac could enable the user to reset and configure AirPort.
However, the older AirPort Extreme A1034 may not have suitable 'AirPort
Utility' version to work with the newer Mac computer. ~ My older AirPort
base stations work with older and newer macOS/OS X across the years.
One of my older Macs has Leopard OS X 10.5.8, and that worked to configure
and uses correct version AirPort Utility; one of the later Mac OS versions did
enable a 'firmware update' to more recent version. But that only goes so far.
An older ASC discussion about this version AirPort Extreme (white orb)
has some information; most is dated. You may find archived info online.

While I've owned several of the 'last build' white orb (with antenna port
and 56K dialup modem) haven't been using them lately. Even have one
from Apple store online, unused refurbished still in the box..!
Older AirPort base stations work OK, but aren't likely the highest security.
My iPad mini1.1 (wi-fi only), iPhone SE, Mac mini G4 1.5GHz, & Mac mini i7
all can use this series; & seem to work well. While your mileage may vary.
I'd been using an even older 'original First edition' AirPort Express, until
recently with Late 2012 Mac mini, which runs EL Capitan 10.11.6. The airport
express actually was older than First edition; it finally failed & did not reset.
The AirPort base should work if you can use AirPort Utility in the Mac's OS for setup.
