How are people dealing with the new mac book usb-c ports?

Thought getting the new mac book pro would be a good idea. I've run into seemingly endless issues with cables/ports

  • my thunderbolt display needs an adapter and no longer charges my laptop...need to carry my charger with me everywhere
  • my keyboard at work no longer plugs into my laptop, i need a "lightening to usb-c cable"...back to the apple store.
  • my music recording system needs a new adapter
  • I need to be ready with an HDMI/USB/everything adapter everywhere i go...if i forget it while going to a conference, i'm hosed as most A/V crew don't carry the adapters

on top of the cost of the laptop, i've already spent $300+ on adapters and keeping track of where they are and when i need to bring them with me has been a total PITA. This is the first time i've bought an apple product and faced endless frustration.

would appreciate any useful advice for dealing with this. doesn't seem like theres 1 swiss army knife adapter to solve these issues.

In a perfect Apple world everything would be wireless. Fortunately most things are. Recharging things will have to wait a while (apparently).

For devices that are not yet Bluetooth or AirPlay enabled, you will require adapters. There are cheaper (and sometimes, better) sources than Apple. Try Monoprice.

You might not like my advice...

Buy extra chargers. I have 3. Extra chargers are very convenient.

Keyboards don’t normally need lightening cables. That sounds odd. As long as you are spending money, maybe check out this old-school keyboard: https://matias.ca/tactilepro/

I don’t know anything about your music recording system. If it still works at all, you are already ahead of the curve.

You might not be ready enough. I suggest a spare adapter. I’ve already had one adapter fail and I’ve seen a number of similar reports. If your machine stops charging, gets really slow, and kernel_task hits 800% cpu, you probably need a new dongle.

In my opinion, you are facing a very similar dilemma to upgrading a component stereo.

If you buy a new component "just as good as" the old stuff, your overall system never gets any better than the first component you bought. But it is really expensive to replace everything all at once. You need to buy new components that are MUCH more advanced, but you may not get to appreciate the advances until later, when you replace more components.

In the interim, you may need adapters until you replace more components. Eventually the new ones will all have USB-C connectors on them already.
