AirPods disconnect

Whenever I connect my AirPods to my MacBook Air of iPhone XR, it seems to work fine. But as soon as I play something, they disconnect and it plays out loud. If I try to connect them again, the sound stops as soon as they connect. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
