How to upgrade a Mac book Pro in order to download an app that needs a higher version software.

My Macbook Pro 15" is up to date on software, however, it could not download visual studio and core shell apps because these require higher version than what it has. There are no new software update notifications. How do I get my Mac book pro to upgrade to a higher version software than it has?
