How to turn off onscreen keyboard when using magic keyboard on iPad pro

When I use my 11” iPad pro with the magic keyboard attached the onscreen keyboard still pops up. While I can minimize it it returns whenever a new text field appears. Is there a way to turn off that behavior.

By magic keyboard I mean the Apple keyboard ‘case’ for the iPad pro.

thanks

iPad Pro, iOS 12

You're welcome. It could be that that's how the interface with the Folio Keyboard works, but since I don't use one, I can't validate that all.

I've never seen that before, but I use a Bluetooth Keyboard, not the Apple Folio Keyboard. If no one else chimes in, I'd reach out to Apple Support directly or schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar.

I'm wondering if you have selected a different keyboard in your iPad Settings? Settings > General > Keyboards

This tells you how to bring it up and down:

Switch to software keyboard

You might need to use your software keyboard instead of the Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard to do things like type accented characters or use dictation. To show the software keyboard, tap the down arrow key on your Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard, then touch and hold  until the software keyboard appears. To hide the keyboard again, tap .

I guess it is actually called the Smart Keyboard folio.

My problem is trying to make the soft keyboard entirely disappear. The default minimum is a gray band on the bottom with a display of word suggestions.

If I press the down carat it will disappear until I next type a return or enter a new field.

I would like a way to make it go away altogether when I am using the physical keyboard - free my screen real estate.

There is no keyboard icon, but there is the world globe icon that allows selecting alternate soft keyboards.
