i own an Apple Watch series 3 38mm, I ordered a band for 40-42mm will the band still fit my Apple Watch?

Yes. The nominal case size is different in Series 4 but the band fixing is identical for Series 4/40mm or older 38mm watches. The S4/44mm is compatible with older 42mm watches.
